Domestic Science

Created by Nancy O’Banion, this double-sided accordion fold book can be read in two directions from both sides. One direction is entitled “Idioms,” which is a combination of words with special meaning that cannot be inferred from a translation of their separate parts. This section explores the effect of context on meaning and how combinations and presentations of words communicate ideas that transcend individual meaning.

The book is illustrated with over 50 linoleum block prints and five pop-ups. The text was hand-set in 12 point Gill Sans type. Domestic Science is housed in a clamshell box with black and white checked linoleum-cut paper and a gold label.
