Hecho a Mano en Cuba

Hecho a Mano en Cuba (Made by Hand in Cuba) is two visual books pondering the complexity of Cuba. Each book is created with 14 paper cigars and bound with two cords. The books contain printed and collaged maps of Cuba and found-paper ephemera. Each cigar has its own historical ring, bearing the images of 19th century European monarchs or US corporations, or is made from Automobile Club road maps with printing from the original lithography stones. The cigars are bound as palm leaf books and housed in a handmade paper box printed with tobacco leaves.

Artist Steven C. Daiber said: "In September 2003 I went to Havana, Cuba for 10 months. In Havana I was able to print in three different print shops. First printing at the state-run Taller Experimenta de Grafica, where there is an archive of hundreds of lithographic stones containing images used in the Cuban tobacco industry, advertising, North American comics.”
