This Original Self

Artist Sandra Turley explored the complex issues surrounding adoption in This Original Self. The search for self is contained within the hard covers of the book, which uses British law concerning the rights of individuals to access their own birth records. By using both letterpress and a silkscreen method of printing called “devore,” the images, encased in accordion folds, appear eaten out of the transparent cloth material, emphasizing the loss of family identity. The project was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, the O.P. and W.E. Edwards Foundation, and the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation.
